Project overview
With the industry-wide transition to XtendFlex® only varieties, growers now face new challenges in managing regrowth and volunteers after harvest. Previously, glufosinate was a key tool for end-of-season control but this option is no longer available for XtendFlex crops. In zero-till and Magnet (pupae-busting replacement) systems, this increases the risk of surviving regrowth, which can carry pests, diseases, and compromise Bollgard stewardship.
The XtendFlex End-of-Season Management project is helping growers identify reliable chemical strategies for destroying ratoon cotton and volunteers under Australian conditions. This project aims to test a wide range of herbicide mixes and timings.
These results will inform practical best-practice guidelines for XtendFlex systems, helping growers protect stewardship, break pest cycles, and maintain clean rotations while complying with new technology requirements.
Outcomes and achievements
- Design and implement trials to evaluate new chemistries and tank mixes for XtendFlex regrowth control.
- Established small-plot and commercial-scale trials.
- Provided practical recommendations for managing volunteers safely without glufosinate.
Key contributors and partners
Our thanks to Skerman Agriculture and the growers and consultants from the Namoi and Darling Downs who collaborated on the End of Season XtendFlex® project.
