Safe Seed Storage
A suitable safe seed storage location will allow you to minimise or control the following:
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Ventilation
- Sun damage and dust
- Bag damage
- Rain, leaks and condensation
- Rodents
- Insects
- Theft
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
Generally the suitability of a location for short term (1 – 9 months) storage of cotton seed can be assessed by using the following equation:
AIR RELATIVE HUMIDITY + AVERAGE DAILY TEMPERATURE (oC) = < 80
SAFE ON-FARM STORAGE
USE OF FARM SHEDS
If using a farm shed for storage you should ensure that you can manage the above mentioned controls, in particular temperature and humidity.
USE OF SHIPPING CONTAINERS
Shipping containers can be a good seed storage option as it allows you more control over the above mentioned factors. If using a standard contained the ideal set up would include:
- Sited on eastern side of and immediately adjacent to a high shed
- False roof 30 to 40 cm above container roof
- ‘Whirly bird’ ventilator installed
- Painted white
- Sitting about 80cm above ground
